THIS IS A FIRST!

Good morning everyone! Since I have not had a blog before, this makes me a little nervous. In these blog posts, I want to get you excited about some items and projects, give you some helpful hints, and inspire you.

Thank you so much for visiting my site - I hope you found some things that you really liked. I will be adding to the site on a regular basis, so be sure to stay tuned.

HELPFUL HINT for the day - are you one who pre-washes your fabric? I am. I know this is a hotly debated subject, but let me explain why I prewash. Unless I am doing a kaleidoscope quilt, I prewash all my fabric. Know how your fabric ravels along the cut edge during the washing cycle and you end up with a tangled mess along the edges? Did you know you can mostly avoid that? Here's how:

Now you may be asking - why prewash? There are 3 reasons why I do (which is just my thing). First of all, if you are using fabrics from different manufacturers in your quilt, remember that not all manufacturers use the same exact quality of griege (grey) goods. This means that all the fabrics may not shrink exactly the same amount when washed. So I wash and dry so that all shrinkage is done BEFORE I construct my quilt. Secondly, if the fabric has any possibility of bleeding dye, let's get that taken care of too! Lastly, if there is any sizing that is formaldehyde based I want it removed before I set an iron to the fabric. I know that formaldehyde is mostly a sizing ingredient of the past, but I would rather be safe than sorry!

Last tidbit for the day - you might say, well, I like the body of the fabric before I wash it so I don't prewash. That is a very valid point. If you want a good starch for your fabrics - either after you prewash or just as you purchase it - try TERIAL MAGIC! It is amazing! (Coming soon to this site!)

Best wishes for a blessed and fruitful day! Happy sewing, quilting and embroidering!
